When a friend was giving away this chair,
I knew exactly what to do with it--"upholster" it with wood.
I have done this before, but for some reason, not for a few years.
I picked nice hardwoods for the seat. I used the original seat as a pattern and cut the pieces with my jigsaw.
For the upper back of the chair, I made a pattern with a piece of newspaper. I didn't worry about using hardwood for the back since it didn't need to be as sturdy.
I painted the chair with white, semi-gloss latex paint. I knew I wanted it to be really chippy so I did not sand the chair ahead of time. The glossy finish makes it so easy to distress.
I glued the wood pieces and then used my air brad nailer to secure them.
I added a little paint to the boards, including the back,
sanded and then finished the chair with Minwax Polyacrylic.
It is a shorter chair, but makes a perfect extra side chair.
